Stairs

Updated: Sep 26, 2020

Stairs in a tiny house may seem like waste of space, considering you could just access the loft using a ladder. However, when it's the middle of the night, or if you're carrying anything, climbing stairs is far easier to navigate. Plus, we designed our stairs in such a way so as to utilize as much space for storage as possible!

The largest space in the stair storage has been designed to house a washer/dryer unit, should I one day decide to install one (I am also ensuring that I have this area wired and plumbed for this appliance, just in case). In the meantime, that space will be used for hanging clothes. The rest of the spaces will surely be home to boardgames, books, tools, or other items I simply cannot live without.

The stairs also had to be built around the fender, which will then be insulated and sealed to ensure the cold and moisture stays out. A big shoutout to my cousin Michael T. who welded metal around the outside fenders to complete the seal!

For the stairs, we used 3/4" plywood, routering out the treads for a more secure fit before using construction adhesive and 1 1/2" screws to bolt the pieces together. Due to space constraints, the rise and run is a bit steeper than standard: 9" rise and 10" run. As you'll notice, the final step at the top is twice the rise and run; this was done purposely, so as to make stepping in and out of the loft easier (thanks for this tip, Tiny House Build!)
